Senator Joseph McCarthy
Joseph McCarthy (1908-1957) was an American senator, and was senator of the state of Wisconsin from 1947 to 1957.
From 1950, McCarthy became widely known as the public face of a period of fear over communism in America. He was known for claiming that there were large amounts of Communists and Soviet spies in the American government and elsewhere. However, he was later unable to prove his claims and this led to him being censored by the government.
The term McCarthyism was applied to anti-communist activities and is used today, usually in reference to allegations that are unable to be proved.
The Red Menace
The Red Menace, also known as The Red Scare, was a period of American history known for it's strong anti-Communist feeling. During 1947 - 1957, the fear was centred upon the thought of foreign communists infiltrating American society.
The Korean War
The war lasted between 1950 and 1953, and was a war between The Democratic People's Republic of Korea, supported by the USA, and the People's Republic of China, supported by the Soviet Union.
The House Committee on un-American activities
The House Committee on Un-American Activities was an investigative committee of the United States House of Representatives. The committee investigated ideas that are often confused with those of Senator Joseph McCarthy, about communism threatening to invade the USA. In fact, after McCarthy's downfall the committee began a gradual decline and was disbanded in 1975.

The Artist
Who won in the major categories?
Best Actress - Meryl Streep (Iron Lady), Best Actor - Jean Dujardin (The Artist) Animated Film - Rango, Cinematography - Hugo, Supporting Actor - Christopher Plummer (The Beginners), Supporting Actress - Octavia Spencer (The Help)
Was it a good night for the British Film industry? Give reasons for your answer.
Although the British film industry did have some successes; such as the win for Meryl Streep for The Iron Lady. However, although other British films such as My Week With Marilyn, War Horse and Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy were nominated, none of these won any awards. Despite this, it could be argued that the publicity generated by simply being nominated will bring these films further success.

UK film research
Organisation - BBC Films
What does the organisation do?
BBC Films is the film-making branch of the BBC. It works in partnership with the major UK and international distributors, producing around eight films per year. Their website describes their ambitions as "making strong British films" and "finding and developing new talent"
How does this benefit the film industry?
This benefits the film industry because the BBC is a well known company, which is likely to factor in the success of the films it produces.
Some of the films it produced in 2011:
Jane Eyre, Brighton Rock, The Awakening, My Week With Marilyn
Some films it is currently working on:
Streetdance 2, Great Expectations
Do the films have a similar theme, style or target audience?
The films produced in 2011, they do not seem to have a similar target audience however when looking further back at releases from BBC Films it suggests they make a lot of historical dramas; films such as The Other Boleyn Girl, The Duchess and even adaptations of old novels and plays such as Great Expectations and the Coriolanus.

The Sitter - 20th Century Fox
